“Never Judge a Book by Its Cover”

There’s always a saying to never judge a book by its cover because one can only see so much on the surface. Growing up we probably believe this saying to be just another way for our teachers and parents to make us dig deeper in the story and find out more before finding out the treasure beneath the ocean. Oh how surprised the Kairos team was the moment we found out how factual this simple statement was! So let us tell you how we managed to chance upon this surprising truth – it all started with Andrianto and Carmen.

This was a couple that you can tell was a couple that was deeply in love but don’t really flaunt it. Andrianto and Carmen for us are not like other couples who like to show how intimate or close they are on social media. So we were really surprised when out of all the places they chose for their pre wedding, they picked Black Lava and Singing Beach in Kintamani. First of all, this was a place that no one – literally no one in our whole history of Kairos picked. For the obvious reasons that the name itself suggest…the place was covered in black lava and sand. 

Honestly, the Kairos team tried to coax them out of choosing this location because it was definitely a challenge to maintain the quality of light and colors of our usual pallete. It was an intense moment because when we went to the location, it was all dark and the sky was gloomy…it felt like a trap! But when we asked Andrianto and Carmen why choose this place, they only smiled and told us to have some faith. What was even more surprising was that during the shoot Andrianto and Carmen made us feel at ease; they laughed and “danced” around and felt at peace with the shoot despite the surroundings not supporting them. I guess we call this being in love no matter where and what the circumstances are. It was definitely a sweet moment for us to capture them there and then. 

As time passed and the sun started to set, that was the big moment of realization of never to judge a book by its cover. The skies cleared up and the rays of the sun setting started to beam down into the sea and the black sand was no longer just black as it reflected the beauty of its true self to us. We were already dropping our jaw because Andrianto and Carmen made the shoot look easy, but the new setting made us drop our jaw even further. It was a really beautiful sight right in front of us. 

When the shoot was over, the team could not contain their amazement and flocked to the couple in sheer excitement. But Andrianto and Carmen closed the session with a simple but yet memorable quote…”Have faith, never judge a book by its cover”.
