More Than A Friend

I have said this plenty of times and I will say it again. I admire couples who diligently spend time on dating before deciding to be with someone for the rest of their lives. This is due to the fact that no matter how long we know someone, there’s always going to be something that will surprise us. Trust me, there will be moments when we are caught off guard. After nine years of dating, Dennis and Monica can vouch to agree with my theory.

My first question during our short interview session was, “So how do you feel being a newly wed?” Her answer was, “I’m very happy that we get to spend most of every moments together. But there’s a lot of adapting to do, from the smallest things like adjusting to our different habits, agreeing on the level of cleanliness in the house to the big things like sharing our family’s secrets.” These new discoveries may intimidate people, make people uncomfortable, and cause people to feel blindsided. However I will argue that new discoveries will lead to breakthroughs that take us to new heights in our relationship.

Why then, if you ask me, would people choose to get out of their comfort zone (dating) and take a leap of faith and graduate to marriage instead? Something just changes the moment we said, “I do”.  It’s like a switch has been flipped and everything changes. It’s as if our hearts silently says, “You’re my confidant like no other. I tell you things no one knows. Cause you’re closer than a friend. You’re my lover.”

But fear not, some things will stay the same. The core of our relationship, the values that we share, the chemistry and connection will remain the same. Nine years have passed and Monica shared her secrets to a long lasting relationship, “Dennis is a trustworthy man. The way he honors his commitments to his family and to me have sustained us throughout these nine years. His ability to always be able to prioritize our relationship has assured me of our happiness.”

Marriage is like a box of assorted chocolate truffles. We might not know what we’re going to get. Sometimes we may encounter new unfamiliar taste. Some moments will remain cozy and comfortable because we are accustomed to the flavor. But I can assure you that those two experiences will zest up our palate and light up our marriage. There aren’t going to be many dull moments because every encounter is fantastic.
