Modern Romantics

Colloque and Betty have been together for ten years. He doesn't give flowers, no grand gestures to profess his love for her. But after hearing their proposal story, I sense that Colloque might present a new kind of romance.

It all happened during their trip to Bali in 2018. Betty had this strong inkling that Colloque was going to propose, but she kept it all to herself and let Colloque took control. “Was there any particular moment that made you feel that way?,” I was curious. She went down the list of the suspicious things Colloque did during the trip that made her raise her eyebrows.

First, Colloque made it a point that they have to go to a fine dining any time he had the chance to. Let me remind you he’s not the romantic type. Secondly, Colloque took some moment to research online on great fine dining places near where they were staying. He never does this, because Betty is always the one calling the shots on food related decisions. Lastly Colloque’s overall behavior during the dinner they had at the restaurant he picked.

The restaurant was gorgeous. The dining area was exposed to the greenest rice field with a humble tent pitched in the middle of it. Colloque couldn't stop asking her to go to the tent with him during the whole dinner. So when the course came to an end, Betty finally agreed.

Alas, in the tent they were. Poor Colloque was so nervous. He tried to hide the huge ring box in his pocket, but the creases on his pants gave it all away. Colloque was tongue-tied. It was a long awkward moment of silence, Betty took it upon herself to cue him, “So do you have something to say?” As strong stream of tears fell down his cheeks, he got on one knee and asked the most important question, “Will you marry me?”

Although flowers and poems will forever the perfect hues to paint the word romantic; I sense a new movement of modern day romance brewing in today’s society. It may not involve ostentatious acts, but the impact is just as strong. It involves vulnerability, transparency and trust. Tears. Some may confuse it for weakness, but for true romantics they are precious gems. Colloque may fail to recite the whole speech he had prepared, but his honest tears communicated what he wanted to say even more perfectly.

Cheers to the modern day romantics!
