Kairos Works

This project for me is like a dream come true. Steven & Ayumi is a couple with a distinct taste and a sense of art. They were so specific with what they wanted, which made working with them such a special, yet challenging experience. Working on their Lovebook was one of the most rare moments in life, where you got to do something beyond what you knew you were capable of. A moment where you pushed yourself to do more. Something that you knew, it was either all or nothing!

The Material

Using solid wood as a material for Lovebook is nothing new for me, but Steven & Ayumi requested a very specific style of finished wood both for the Lovebook cover and the packaging. They want an authentic solid Teak (Jati) wood with rustic finishing. If that wasn't tricky enough, this is. They wanted a naturally aged teak wood. One that is so old that the wood's eye is hollow. That was a tough challenge! But after much effort of hunting for authentic Jepara wood artisan, I finally found the one that could do the job just so brilliantly.

Aside from the wood, Steven also mentioned that he would like authentic & classic brass furniture accessories for the packaging. And when I showed them what I found, I couldn't be more relieved, the stuff met their high standard of artisan goods. They fell in love instantly with the classic brass locket & key set.

For the pages inside, Ayumi liked to have paper material that'll fit the rustic wooden cover & packaging. And from many sample of paper that I have, she chose the perfect one for it. The one wth recycled, rustic texture.

The Design

Steven was very specific about the design, he would like something that resembles a classic pirate's treasure chest. It has to be big in size, displayable in his living room, and make people wonder what it is, and not expecting that there be a wedding photo album inside.

The Photographs & The Paintings

"Cause there is more color in black and white than there is in color."

~Ayumi

Ayumi specifically mentioned how much she loves black and white pictures, then I suggested that all the pictures in the Lovebook to be printed in black and white. She doubted for a while, saying that her parents wouldn't like that for her wedding photo album. Let's just say that she followed what her heart desires and now regrets nothing. The black and white pictures fit perfectly with all the other elements. As for the decorative paintings, Ayumi also loves black and white. Painted with classic Chinese ink with traditional Chinese ink wash style. The style that happens to be my signature painting style.

When the production of the Lovebook was done, I couldn't be more satisfied. Every single element that they requested complements one another brilliantly.

Dear Steven & Ayumi, thank you for the chance of working with you guys in this project. This will be one of the very few projects that I'll remember and be very proud of all my life.

Lots of Love,

Elvin
