Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Distance is usually one of the culprits to the downfall of a relationship. Time and space differences cause delay in communication. When I received the horrifying news about having to be in a long distance relationship with my now husband, my first reaction was, “Aw hell naw!”
His working visa was denied; I still had to pursue my degree in Los Angeles. Our love story continued, yet scattered in two different continents. But we survived and we slayed! Just like what they say, “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.”
The idea of finally being reunited one day is what makes the relationship more exciting. I am convinced that distance challenges us to be better lovers.
Contrary to popular belief, occasional arguments are actually a sign of a healthy relationship. Clashes in opinions demonstrate appreciation of honesty and passion. Despite the distance and time differences, couples that are in a long distance relationship are far from being immune to having heated discussions.
In the midst of an argument, we may let our emotions take over. We convey messages hastily without having a healthy period of time to simmer down. However, when space and time differences are non-negotiable, the heart gets enough time to surrender to the mind. This period of silence diffuses the potentially problematic situation into an open ground for discussion. Usually a compromise is achieved and it’s a win-win situation for both sides.
I can still recall smiling from ear to ear when a case of my favorite brand of bottled water arrived at my doorstep in Los Angeles. It was from him. Every drip of water quenched my parched soul. It was certainly a peculiar gift. Nonetheless, it taught me one thing: an unusual gift can be just as sentimental as a bouquet of flowers. He’s proved himself to be an excellent listener and a thoughtful giver. Limitations in a long distance relationship challenge us to get creative in expressing our raging love to our partner.
Finally, when it is time to meet, it is that much sweeter. Every hug is that much warmer. Every kiss is that much more tender. That is when we realize that our relationship is WORTH IT! Distance was the missing ingredient in order to grow our relationship to the next level. Though it was filled with trials, we came out on the other side as a stronger couple. I cannot wait to share our colorful journey with our children and grandchildren.
